Pendant un an, la réalisatrice a partagé l'intimité de la célèbre soprano entre New York et Paris, l'occasion pour les téléspectateurs de découvrir ou de redécouvrir une artiste au talent complet, à la personnalité vive, de son temps, pleine d'humour.
Du Met de New York, où l'on y suit la star à l'occasion de l'ouverture de la saison avec Lucia di Lamermor, en passant par Paris, où elle enregistre des cantates de Bach, donne des master class, danse, chante, puis un retour à New York pour clore la saison avec La fille du régiment, Esti nous présente Natalie dans son intimité, là où elle joue, chante, vit.

Un document rempli d'émotions où l'on découvre plusieurs facettes d'une femme libre et passionnée, parcourant les coulisses de ses spectacles mais aussi de sa vie, de ses joies, de ses craintes où la caméra d'Esti se fait discrète pour devenir un personnage à part entière, une confidente.

Outstanding soprano Natalie Dessay and conductor Emmanuelle Haïm have come to a great understanding with their numerous Handel recordings, especially 'Delirio' (Handel Cantatas), which sealed their musical companionship and paved the way for a numerous recording projects on Virgin Classics. After their recent recording of Bach's Magnificat and Handel's Dixit Dominus, Natalie Dessay and Emmanuelle Haïm present today their first all-Bach recital.

The programme features three of Bach's superb Cantatas, including the great 'Ich habe genug', in Bach's own arrangement for soprano, BWV 82a. The other two Cantatas are two of only four sacred cantatas that Bach wrote for solo soprano: 'Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen (Praise God in All Lands), is one of Bach's best known cantatas, with an important part for solo trumpet, here performed by young British musician, Neil Brough. Both the soprano part, which calls for a high C in the first and last movements, and the solo trumpet part, which at times trade melodic lines with the soprano on an equal basis, are extremely virtuosic. The third cantata 'Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut' (My Heart Swims in Blood), is one of the earliest cantatas Bach composed – it's vocal parts are technically demanding and contain challenges that Natalie Dessay's meets with the highest artistry.

Opera-lovers can forgive a lot of things, but being bored is usually not one of them. When we're sitting in the opera house thinking, "Oh God — this is so tired, so pedestrian, so lame, why didn't I stay home and watch Weeds on television?" we can achieve consolation in a heartbeat by reminding ourselves of the existence of Natalie Dessay. Has any performer in the past three decades matched Dessay's stunning commitment? Everything she does feels dizzyingly fresh; when she sang Zerbinetta at the Met in the 1997–98 season, those of us in the audience didn't have the slightest hint that she was carefully negotiating any part of "Grossmächtige Prinzessin"; she seemed to be making it up as she went along. In taking on the role, she blasted away years of accumulation of stock soubrette mannerisms and emerged with an entirely original conception of Zerbinetta as a rather sad, beaten-up girl who'd been around the track a few too many times.

All of us have our own private film-clip sequence of Dessay moments, running endlessly through our heads. In particular, I think of her Morgana in Alcina at Lyric Opera of Chicago: she sang "Tornami a vagheggiar" while rolling around the stage with the empty tuxedo belonging to the man she was longing to seduce. And there was her Olympia in the Met's 1998 Les Contes d'Hoffmann, in which, in an advanced stage of pregnancy, she executed amazing physical stunts onstage while nailing an all but unheard-of high G. The purely audio moments are equally indelible: think of her "Martern aller Arten," recorded with Louis Langrée and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, in which she superbly captures, in vocal terms, Konstanze's self-deception. Like all great singers, her song seems really to be elevated speech.

One of the most notable achievements of Dessay's career is the way in which she has exploded the boundaries for the soprano léger. Once, that meant a steady diet of Olympias, Queens of the Night and the like; while these performances might be highly praised vocally, they weren't generally taken too seriously as characterizations. Dessay proved once and for all that the artist's imagination can trump any inherent limitations of the Fach. In the fall of 2007, Dessay opened the Met season (the second in the regime of general director Peter Gelb) with a new production of Lucia di Lammermoor, staged by Mary Zimmerman. In interviews, Dessay was candid about what she had hoped to achieve — something frightening, dug in: a real actress's Lucia. She disturbed some of her admirers by suggesting that she identified herself as an actress first and a singer second. But the
real glory of Dessay's performances is that acting and singing are miraculously, quixotically entwined; one is not simply overlaid on the other. She has conquered many of the classic bel canto roles — Lucia, Amina, Marie in La Fille du Régiment — in the best possible way, by making them her own. It's an astonishing accomplishment when you think about the galvanizing soprano voices that dominated the bel canto revival of the 1950s and '60s. While critics often reach for pointless comparisons, as if a great artist needed to be defined by those who came before her, Dessay truly cannot be said to stand in the shadow of any performer.

I have never discussed this with her, but I suspect that when Dessay sets foot onstage, she has one thing in mind — the audience. I can think of no other star today whose performances seem such a bracing gift to the people who actually pay to sit in the theater and — they hope — have an evening that transports them. I didn't have the pleasure of experiencing Renata Tebaldi in the theater, but OPERA NEWS's editor-in-chief, F. Paul Driscoll, did. He once told me that she had the ability to make every single person in the theater feel that her performance was being transmitted solely and specifically to him. I think that many of the greatest artists I have seen — Maureen Forrester, Maggie Smith, Teresa Stratas — have that ability, and Natalie Dessay is inarguably in their company. It's as if it never occurred to her to give anything less than a full-out performance. But I've always had the feeling that there's another artist lurking behind the one who's going through the vocal and physical pyrotechnics onstage, one who says conspiratorially to us, "Here — this is just for you." And damned if we don't accept it, gratefully.

This year's honorees include composer John Adams, sopranos Natalie Dessay and Renée Fleming, mezzo-soprano and opera legend Marilyn Horne, and baritone Sherrill Milnes. Susan Graham, who hosted last year's presentation, will reprise her turn as master of ceremonies. She is joined for the occasion by co-host Thomas Hampson. The awards, which pay tribute to distinguished achievement in the world of opera, will be presented by Plácido Domingo, Alan Gilbert, Garrison Keillor, James Levine, and Marian Seldes. Natalie Dessay est une des cantatrices les plus connues et les plus demandées au monde. Elle commence sur le tard, connaît des soucis de santé, mais rien n'a empêché la brune de conquérir le monde de la musique classique avec une voix exceptionnelle. Aujourd'hui l'Académie Charles Cros a récompensé la chanteuse pour sa brillante carrière.

Natalie Dessay est une pointure de l'opéra, personne ne chante aussi bien qu'elle l'air de la reine de la nuit dans La Flûte Enchantée de Mozart... Ses aigus sont d'une extraordinaire clarté et ont mis d'accord plus d'un public: Dessay est l'une des meilleures sopranos mondiales. Voilà pourquoi l'Académie Charles Cros a honoré la chanteuse de quarante-trois ans ce matin à la Cité De La Musique à Paris. Mais comme il faut coller à l'actualité de la belle, c'est aussi pour son magnifique album La Fille Du Régiment de Donizetti qu'elle était à l'honneur.
L'institution ne s'est pas arrêtée là et a aussi distribué dix-neuf récompenses couronnant des disques et des DVD de musique classique et contemporaine, de variétés et de jazz. On trouve ainsi dans la liste des primés le chanteur des Mots Bleus, Christophe, pour son opus intitulé Aimer Ce Que Nous Sommes, Alex Beaupain et son 33 Tours; ou encore le Quatuor Modigliani et leur album Quatuors A Cordes De Haydn.

Le Metropolitan Opera (Met) de New York célèbrera son 125e anniversaire par un gala exceptionnel le 15 mars prochain, réunissant les plus grands chanteurs lyriques du monde.

Le directeur musical du Met, James Levine, a choisi 26 extraits d'opéras célèbres, mis en scène de façon à évoquer l'histoire de cette scène légendaire new-yorkaise et ses productions les plus importantes.

«Cela va être l'un des galas les plus formidables que nous ayons jamais réalisés, tant par les artistes que par le public», a estimé M. Levine.

«Avec les plus grands artistes d'aujourd'hui, nous allons rendre hommage à la glorieuse histoire du Met, en évoquant les moments de légende que nous aurions tous rêvé de vivre», a-t-il ajouté.


Parmi les grands noms qui se produiront le 15 mars, figurent Roberto Alagna, Aleksandrs Antonenko, Kim Begley, Stephanie Blythe, Joseph Calleja, Natalie Dessay et Renée Fleming.

Placido Domingo, Juan Diego Flórez, Angela Gheorghiu, Marcello Giordani, Maria Guleghina, Thomas Hampson, Ben Heppner, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Maija Kovalevska, Mariusz Kwiecien, Waltraud Meier, Susanne Mentzer, James Morris, René Pape, Sondra Radvanovsky, John Relyea et Deborah Voigt complètent cette liste exceptionnelle.

Quatre extraits du Faust de Gounod, qui fut la première oeuvre lyrique montée au Met, le 22 octobre 1883, et une sélection des grands classiques des répertoires italien, allemand, russe et français seront présentés lors de ce gala.

Ce livre-disque ne révolutionnera certainement pas l'interprétation du célèbre conte d'Andersen, mais ce sage classicisme est de bon aloi. Le livre, carré, tout en couleurs, marie la sobre élégance des illustrations (en pleine page) et la belle simplicité du texte, en opposition de blanc. Les quarante-cinq pages du conte sont suivies de 2 pages de Coulisses : une présentation biographique rapide pour chaque intervenant - auteur, compositeur, interprètes, peintre - éclaire intelligemment l'ensemble du projet, et singularise avec pertinence toutes ces énergies convergentes.

Sirène, grand-mère, sorcière, la voix apaisante de Natalie Dessay se glisse avec un égal bonheur dans chacun des personnages ; les volutes de Peer Gynt, en accompagnement ou en intervalle entre les séquences narratives, épousent les ondulations des phrases, miment l'arrivée du prince, irradient des éblouissements de la petite sirène. La musique originelle, écrite pour orchestre symphonique de cent musiciens, a été efficacement transcrite par Fabrice Pierre pour un ensemble de six musiciens (l'ensemble Agora), jeunes parents qui nous ouvrent de plain-pied le monde de l'enfance : la fluidité de la partition s'en trouve ainsi soulignée, sans perdre pour autant de sa force initiale.

En bonus, la magie se prolonge par une grande demi-heure de musique seule (Peer Gynt), qui nous épargne la sortie brutale de l'univers onirique ; on nage avec délectation dans ses ondes ...

Voilà un joli cadeau de Noël, un plaisir pour les yeux et pour les oreilles... A lire, à contempler, à écouter sans modération.
